Last night I had the opportunity to meet Clinton Kelly (of What Not to Wear and The Chew) fame at Macy’s in Peabody, MA. He was putting on a fashion show of fall trends and giving tips for what garments would work for different body types. He also signed copies of his book Oh No She Didn’t.
I took advantage of this opportunity to speak with my idol and ask for advice on how I could jumpstart my image consulting career. He told me to send an email, and here is what I wrote:
I really enjoyed seeing and speaking to you last night. Thank you so much for giving me advice and signing my book. As I told you, I have recently been given the opportunity to get my styling career off the ground, but I was hoping you could provide some guidance or tips.
From a young age I have had dreams of one day becoming an image consultant. To achieve this goal, I followed a career path similar to yours: studied PR at Boston University, interned at Glamour Spain, assisted image consultants in the Boston area and started a fashion blog, all the while striving to look my best and help others do so as well.
I’ve been working as a social media manager for the past two years, so I will use those media to my advantage. But I need to establish a client base and I’m not sure how to get started. How did you get where you are today? What tips do you have for someone trying to start her own image consulting service? Any help you could provide would be much appreciated and cherished.

I’m hoping to hear back soon, and I’ll add an update when I do.[UPDATE]Here is Clinton’s response:
